The Essentials of Water Composition
… and its importance in water treatment
Water is vital to life, and its composition is fundamental to understanding the processes needed to ensure it’s safe for consumption. While water composition may seem simple—just two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom (H20) — this simplicity masks a complex interplay of chemical characteristics that are essential for effective water treatment.
What’s in Water?
Water, in its purest form, is H₂O, but in nature, it is never truly pure. It contains a mix of dissolved minerals, gases, organic matter, and various impurities that can vary based on its source. These include:
- Minerals: Calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), and potassium (K) are common in natural water, influencing hardness and taste.
- Gases: Oxygen (O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are typically dissolved in water, affecting its acidity or pH level.
- Organic Matter: Plant material, microorganisms, and pollutants can all be present, particularly in untreated water sources.
- Inorganic Compounds: These might include heavy metals like lead (Pb) or mercury (Hg), nitrates (NO3), and sulphates (SO42, which can be harmful if present in significant concentrations.

Why Water Composition Matters in Water Treatment
Understanding water composition is crucial for designing effective treatment systems. The goal of water treatment is to remove harmful contaminants while preserving beneficial minerals. Here’s how water composition influences the treatment process:
PH Adjustment:
The pH level of water affects how contaminants are removed. For instance, some purification processes are more effective under acidic or basic conditions. Adjusting the pH is often a first step in water treatment to optimise other processes like coagulation and disinfection.
